Memorial

It is the iconic structure

Simply carved from stone

On which a simple inscription

A name of a son meaning –

There is no going home

Standing on land across the globe

Each one so personal

A monument to when the world

Went mad and rage unfurled

That the war was won

Is history now and gone

And there are other structures

Many forgotten long ago

To those who should be remembered

No longer are they the foe

But memorials to the sons

Who did their duty well

And who now lie for all time

In a foreign field
