I walk the streets

My eyes cast down

In my ragged clothing

Like me is worn and torn

Eye contact with strangers

Returned with a contemptuous frown

Words unspoken

Plain for all to see

Open hostility

Aimed directly at me

Who let this vagrant

Into our town

He is not worthy

He brings us down

What they don’t know

They don’t understand

There were other walks

Across the burning sand

Fighting for their freedom

In some foreign lands

Comrades who walked –

Together mile on mile

Those who have fallen

Never again to rise

Fell in order that

Others may be free

To look on down on us

With naked contempt

The result of serving

Our country is this

Is that all we achieved?
