Desert Island 7 – “Ride of the Valkyries”

Day 7 Music 7 of my Desert Island discs and today it is the stirring “Ride of the Valkyries”

Composed by Wagner in 1854 as part of the wider opera the Ride of the Valkyries depicts four of the eight Valkyrie sisters of Brünnhilde gathered in preparation for the transportation of fallen heroes to Valhalla.

What makes this special to me is that it is the Regimental March of the Parachute Regiment in which both my father and eldest brother served and was played at their funerals.

After fifteen years the Parachute Regiment has won the right to have the “Pegasus” restored to their uniforms.

“Ride of the Valkyries” should in my view be played in the pitch black of night at full blast and just let the mind soar to your own personal Valhalla.
