I remember when I was young

That your word would be your bond

No need for lawyers and contracts

A handshake would be enough

I remember when I was young

How we were raised to trust

No need to lock our doors at night

In our safe neighbourhood

But times have changed

The older I have got

We all feel so uncertain

So we all keep our doors locked

Handshakes still of course exist

When the deal is done

But not before the lawyers

Have agreed the contracts

To avoid us getting burned

Our word no longer is enough

All because we have learned

To treat others with mistrust
