A Soldiers Tale

Thank you for your service

You all are heroes

They cried when we came home

We all thought we served

For everyone to be free

We served our country

We were told for liberty

They said we were the saviours

Of this democracy

How wrong we were

And how naive

To believe that our country

Would return the favour

And treat us with dignity

Only to find that when no longer needed

We were discarded homeless –

To the mercy of the streets

But now I’ve found myself a home

In a room that’s eight by ten

Three hot meals and a bed

Time for me to be alone

To face my demons and torment

In solitude at no expense

I still love my country

I will always call it home

From this safe and secure place

In my prison cell that has become

My home
