“Rough Sleepers”

They sleep upon our streets

Where many of them die

For them nobody weeps

People simply walk on by

They sleep upon our streets

Our name for them derides

We call them the “rough sleepers”

Forgetting that each inside

Is a fellow human being

Simply trying to survive

They sleep upon our streets

In doorways and on pavements

We want then moving on

They’re an embarrassment

They sleep upon the streets

These homeless women and men

It’s a shame upon us all

That we decide it not to end

They sleep upon the streets

Because of our inhumanity

But underneath the bundle of rags

Is a person like you and me
