People Win Battles

There is a misconception

That is put about by knobs

That wars and battles all were won

On the playing fields of Eton

For those who were there

They know it isn’t true

The battles were all won

By men from the streets

Of Manchester and Liverpool

Ordinary men

Extraordinary men

Who never got to grow

From the streets of cities

Of Newcastle –

And Glasgow

Wars are won by men

Taken from the fields

Suffolk, Norfolk, Devon

They all answered the call

Battles were won by women

From all across the land

Who stepped into the breach

To protect this precious land

And today this country of mine

Has to be fought for and taken back

Into the caring hands

Of the next generation of people

Who come from the same land
