Northampton MackCon or “You Can Fool All of the People….”

Once again this year, as we have seen in the past four years at budget time, the Northampton Conservatives and their Leader Councillor David Mackintosh are applauding their own decision to freeze the Council Tax,

” to help hard working and hard pressed families”.

Councillor Mackintosh has taken personal responsibility and credit for the decision to freeze the council tax claiming he is determined “to help hard working and hard pressed families”.

The question is whether he is being honest or is this just another of his con tricks of epic proportions treating the public as the complete and utter fools he thinks them to be as shown by how he has totally dismissed and disregarded them during his time in office.

There is no question that the Northampton Borough Council Council Tax for a Band D home has been frozen at £196 a year, or put another way £3.77 a week for the past four years, a 2% annual increase would have seen this increase to £4.07 a week or for the mathematicians amongst you an increase of 30 pence a week.

In anyone’s understanding of home economics hardly an amount that will help “hard working and hard pressed families”, being not even enough to buy a pint of milk a week.

The con trick as with all con tricks if they are to be successful is to ignore the facts and truth by spinning a story which is so huge that people simply can’t believe that it couldn’t possibly be untrue.

Councillor Mackintosh is clearly a keen exponent of the Josef Goebbels approach to politics with Northampton as his own personal state.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
— Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

Eric and David – Best Friends? Two peas from the same pod

The true facts are that Eric Pickles MP the Minister for Local Government and who according to Councillor Mackintosh is his very good friend who seeks his advice on Local Government, made it very clear in 2011 that if Councils increased Council Tax he would cut the equivalent amount from the annual Government Grant they receive.

In effect the coalition Government have held a gun to the head of Local Government.

It was a therefore a threat from the Conservative Government that forced a decision to freeze Council Tax and not Councillor Mackintosh

Amazingly, or perhaps not, Councillor Mackintosh in contrast to his claims as a Borough Councillor voted for and vehemently supported increasing the County Council Tax by 1.99% which was an increase of £206 a year, £3.96 a week?

Even more interesting is that he is going to vote for another increase amounting to an another additional £24 a year, 47p a week County Council increase this year?

If you were being cynical you’d perhaps suggest that the 23% increase in Councillor Allowances he also voted for has to be paid by someone.

I couldn’t possibly comment.

By this time you may have worked out that Councillor Mackintosh in ‘SUPPORTING’ what he calls “hard working and hard pressed people” has voted not to increase Council Tax by 30p a week at the Borough Council whilst promoting and voting for the same residents to have their Council Tax increased by over £4 a week at the County.

This is receipt and hypocrisy of epic proportions from an already discredited Leader of the Borough Council and his Conservative colleagues, and yet is one the people of Northampton have accepted and swallowed without complaint.

Perhaps it’s a sign of the times that people just shrug and take the view of “what can you expect from politicians who we know are renowned for not always, if ever telling the truth”.

There is a very good reason why people should be interested in the NBC Council Tax MackCon because it has led to cuts in the front line services to the elderly, vulnerable, disabled, homeless, policing and the environment that impacts on their lives their families, friends and neighbours every day.

The cumulative total of funding cut from front line services from not increasing Council Tax by 30p a week, to the people of Northampton over the past four years through the combination of threats from Eric Pickles MP and his ally Cllr David Mackintosh is over £1 million.

The question for the people of Northampton is would they be prepared to pay an extra 30p a week in Council Tax to clear the fly tipping and rubbish that plagues the town, to provided call care and social services to the elderly in their homes, to prevent homelessness and to provide funding for additional policing – ALL OF WHICH – Councillor Mackintosh has cut funding for?

It may be that people have been sucked into the Northampton Conservatives me, me, me world of self-interest which has no regard for their neighbours or the environment.

You can fool all of the people ... if you treat them with contempt
You can fool all of the people … if you treat them with contempt

If that is the case then they remain entitled to complain about increases in fly-tipping, crime, looking after the elderly and disabled etc, but they also have to accept that others are entitled if it comes home to affect them and their families to either disregard their cries of anguish or at least not take them seriously.

The fact is that the claims of freezing Borough Council Tax as being “to help hard working and hard pressed families” is not only dishonest and deceitful but another example of spin from Councillor Mackintosh.

It is a classic MackCon which disproves the theory,

“That you can’t fool all of the people all of the time”
